John Dalton, an influential English scientist, developed the first modern atomic theory in the early 1800s. He studied the behavior of gases and came to the conclusion that different substances must be comprised of discrete particles. He hypothesized that those discrete particles have different sizes and weights and began to systematically weigh different substances. He also began using symbols to represent the different elements found in nature.
